How Do You Become A Children’s Book Author?

How do you become a children’s book author?

You write a children’s book. 😉

But wait, there’s a lot more that goes into it than that. This, however, is not intended to be a tutorial on writing a book and getting it published. I want to encourage you to believe in yourself and your ability to figure things out.

My brand-new children’s book: Bravery: A Baby Sea Turtle’s First Adventure, was officially released this week, November 1, 2023! I originally wrote the story about two years ago, if memory serves me correctly, and it may still be floating around the Internet somewhere on my old blog. It was always intended to be a children’s book in my mind! But I had no idea how to accomplish that. So instead of forgetting the story, I captured it in the form of a blog post…and there it sat.

Then one day I decided that if it was ever going to become a children’s book, I needed to figure out how to accomplish that dream and had better just get started. So, I did.

Thank goodness for Google and a friend who is an accomplished author. I was able to do my own research and then bounce ideas and seek guidance from her. I made a few trial-and-error moves along the way, and submitted edits and formatting changes, as it was important for the end result to be something that I was proud of! I learned a great deal in the process and will hopefully be able to pay it forward when a friend comes to me with questions of their own.

So many good takeaways in this short blog post:

  1. You CAN do it!

  2. Have faith in your ability to figure things out.

  3. Pool your resources, and ask for help

  4. Do not settle for mediocrity, create exactly what you want to put into the world.

  5. Don’t overthink all the steps you aren’t sure of! Ever heard of analysis paralysis? You can worry so much about everything that could go wrong, all the possibilities, etc., that you do nothing.

  6. Take the first step. Then tomorrow take the next.

I’d love to invite you to read my book! I am extremely proud of it and am thankful for a talented friend who illustrated for me, bringing Shelley, my baby loggerhead sea turtle 🐢, to life on the pages of my new favorite children’s book.
