One kind word of encouragement, one smile or one hug at the right time can be life-changing. I am always amazed at how little it takes to put a smile on someone’s face and raise their spirits.

An encouraging word…it’s the gift that keeps on giving.
I don’t think you’ll ever fully know the extent to which a kind word might benefit another person.
Can you think of a time when you were having a difficult day? Or weren’t doing as well as you’d hoped to on a project/assignment/goal? Or when you were feeling down, less than, depressed…
and then SOMEBODY gave you a compliment, an encouraging or kind word, a pat on the back, an arm squeeze (when we were allowed to touch each other 🙃), or simply a SMILE??
Your mood instantly changed.
Your spirits lifted.
You felt more confident.
You felt more determined.
You felt heard, understood.
YOU FELT BETTER!
Did it require a huge gesture to notice these changes?? I doubt it.
Sometimes the smallest gesture, a smile, is all it takes to encourage another human being.
And another funny thing happens when you give some encouragement, not only does the other person feel better, YOU feel better in knowing you made a positive impact on their day and life. Giving encouragement has a reciprocal effect! It’s like magic!
Giving encouragement will:
Lift YOUR spirits.
Make YOU feel kind and compassionate.
Put YOU in a better mood.
Make YOUR day a little brighter. ☀️
In light of everything that is going on in our world today, I believe people are in desperate need of encouragement.
Here are some easy ways you can encourage others:
1. When you see something you like, enjoy, appreciate – whether it’s something about another person, something they are doing, something they are wearing…tell them.
2. When you receive exceptional service, let it be known. And not only to the person delivering the great service, mention it to their supervisor! I started my professional career in customer service and believe me when I tell you, this is SO appreciated. Usually the manager or supervisor only gets called over when there is a complaint. You not only make the employee’s day when you thank or compliment them directly, trust me, that manager would love to hear something positive!
3. When somebody is making an effort, acknowledge it!
4. Even in situations that don’t go exactly as planned, look for the positive in the situation and be sure to point that out. There is always a lesson to be learned, even when things don’t go as planned.
5. BUILD UP other people and their suggestions. If somebody has recommended something to you, shared something with you, shown you how to do something, be sure to give them credit and let other’s know about it. It’s a great confidence boost to that person.
6. When you introduce a friend to somebody new, include something you love about them in the introduction.
7. Send a short note, text, message to a friend. A short, “I’m thinking about you” gets the point across and will put a smile on their face.
8. Hold the door for somebody, pick up something they’ve dropped (are we allowed to still do this in light of COVID? 🙄), say hello.
9. SMILE! 😊
Almost everybody enjoys being encouraged from time-to-time. It doesn’t take much for you to make somebody’s day, lift their spirits, and possibly even change their life. So, I encourage you to look for opportunities to be an encouragement to others.
In today’s society we are all about QUICK! We want access to everything, at our fingertips, all-the-time, 24/7. God forbid we don’t have an Internet signal for every single moment of our day.
Who remembers having to actually go to the library to use a reference book? Remember those giant encyclopedias? I was one of the fortunate kids growing up, my family had two different sets, saving me many trips to the library. But still, I spent many hours at a library while in school, working on a term paper or researching a project. And don’t get me started on the micro-fiche. Many of you reading this blog post won’t even know what I’m talking about. It was a really giant, yet pretty cool, machine you’d find in libraries that would allow you to search through old periodicals and read scanned articles. You definitely felt like a sleuth while using that baby! I digress.
No, today, we have all the knowledge the smartest minds, from all over the world, have accumulated, right at the tips of our fingers! Most information is simply one Google search away.
So, could you research tips to boost the level of happiness in your life? Sure you could! But for some reason, you’ve chosen to look at this form of media and are reading my written words. So let me BE QUICK, because I don’t want you to lose interest or feel the need to go search for this simple, but effective, tip on your own! I want to provide it for you.
What is a sure-fire way to increase your own happiness?? MAKE SOMEBODY ELSE HAPPY!
This could be somebody you know and love or a complete stranger. The thing is, sharing happiness is a reciprocal activity. When you make somebody else feel happy, the sheer knowledge that you are responsible for their increased happiness, MAKES YOU HAPPY! It’s like magic!
Don’t believe me? TRY IT OUT! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the result! The next time you need to boost your own spirit, do something nice for somebody else and watch your mood (and happiness meter) improve.
Do you have a friend who always seems to be happy? They never seem to have a down day and are always encouraging others? You may find yourself thinking, “Wow, are they lucky! Nothing ever goes wrong in their life!” Chances are they have plenty of things that “go wrong” in their life. None of us escape life without any challenges or disappointments. So, what’s the difference? They have learned to create their own happiness.
I’ve heard a great quote from Rachel Hollis, “You, and only you, are ultimately responsible for who you become and how happy you are.” Let that sink in, YOU decide how happy you are! So, what if you could learn to CREATE YOUR OWN HAPPINESS? Well, you can and here are a few tips for you!
Stop comparing yourself to others! Chances are, when you are comparing your life to somebody else’s life, you don’t even have a clue what is going on in their life. Sure you see how they are presenting themselves on the outside, but you do not know what is going on internally! Those gorgeous outfits, great handbag, beautiful haircut…she may look perfect, but that is just the image she wants the world to see…remember that. Looking perfect is not the same as feeling perfect.
And let’s talk social media for a second. When you are scrolling Facebook or Instagram, you are seeing somebody’s “highlight reel”. This is not real life. It’s part of their life, being presented with the spin they want to put on it. Most people aren’t showing you their difficult days, their doubts, insecurities, etc. They are sharing their highlights! So stop comparing your every day to their best day!
Surround yourself with positivity! You are what you consume. What are you filling your mind with? Is it positive? Is it uplifting? Or are you filling your mind with negativity, drama, and things that discourage you.
I want you to think about the media that you are consuming, but also about the people you are surrounding yourself with. Jim Rohn is attributed with the quote, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” You want to be happier? Hang out with the people who make you happy! Don’t have friends who inspire you, lift your spirits, or encourage you to grow and be a better person? Then I encourage you to seek them out! Look for ways to put yourself in the proximity of people who are positive. (I invite you to join my Facebook group, Start Blooming Now, Create A Life You Love.)
Do more of what makes you happy! Sounds easy, right? It is! Take a few minutes to think of all the things you really enjoy doing! The things that make you happy, bring you joy, fill up your soul, and then do more of those things. Don’t leave them to chance either, schedule them into your week. I want you to purposefully schedule these events!
Next, I want you to figure out what things drain you, aren’t in alignment with your goals or purpose, things you are doing simply out of obligation. Start saying, “NO” to these things, delegate or outsource them when possible. By doing more of what makes you happy and less of what does not make you happy, you are immediately going to feel your happiness meter rise!
De-clutter your life – your mind, your home, your heart! When you de-clutter not only your personal living space, but the things you are consuming and the people you are spending time with that might not be the best for you, those things that drain your positivity and energy, you immediately feel lighter. When you remove things that aren’t serving you any longer, and are just creating clutter and noise in your life, you allow more room in your life for things that bring you happiness and joy.
The main thing to remember when creating your own happiness is that, YOU are in control. YOU get to decide what/whom you allow in your life. Eliminate, or decrease, the things that aren’t bringing you joy, positivity, and happiness and increase the things that are providing you joy, positivity, and happiness.
There is nobody else in the world exactly like me, having experienced all the things that I have. How could there be? I mean, take a look at these stats:
I have a set of parents, three brothers and one sister, three sets of grandparents, a husband, two children, three sister-in-laws and one brother-in-law, nine nieces and nephews. I’ve moved 18 times, lived in 20 houses, in ten different states and three countries. Throw in holding 15 different jobs and there is absolutely no way anybody in the world could even remotely be qualified to be me.
Nope, not with those stats.
And I bet you have a similar story to tell. Then why do you not think you are special?
You are! You have experienced things nobody else has. You have hopes and dreams that nobody else does, in quite the manner that you hold them. Your family, your friends, your home, your travels, your hobbies…all these things make you YOU.
It’s easy to not feel special. I think it happens to many of us throughout our lives. But I want to reiterate to you that you ARE indeed special. You have gifts to offer those around you. You just don’t realize they are gifts. And why not?
You don’t even realize what you do is magical. You think everybody can do what you do. Let’s say for example that you are empathetic, that you can put yourself into another person’s shoes, understand their feelings and emotions. This comes natural to you, so you don’t give it a second thought. But everybody is NOT like this. It does not come natural to others, and it is a gift.
Perhaps you are outgoing and friendly and make others feel happy just by being in your presence. No big deal, right?? Nope, everybody is not like this! Trust me. This is a gift. Your gift. You need to embrace that this is a quality that makes you uniquely you and is a gift to share with others.
You have a magnetic magic about you. Don’t be afraid or selfish (which is what you are doing when you don’t share your gifts) …go ahead and share it, share you, with the world.

It’s like school supply shopping for grown-ups!
I think one of the reasons I love to buy a new planner is that the nice, blank, clean pages seem to make me feel like anything is possible for the upcoming year. All the ideas I continually have running through my mind, the goals, the plans, they all seem possible!
So naturally, I want a functional planner. The layout has to make sense for me. I need a monthly view, daily sections with enough room to write in my appointments, reach-outs and new contacts made for my businesses, etc. But to find a planner with extra goodies included, makes me extra happy.
Let me share my favorite features of bloom Daily Planners’ Vision Planner and Calendar, which is the planner I am currently using (and loving).
- First of all, the cover! “This Year is For Blooming” is the quote on the front of my planner. And if you know anything about me, and since you are here on my “Bloom with Bec” website, I’ll assume you do; you know this resonated with me and had me pulling my wallet out of my purse! There are plenty of other gorgeous designs to choose from!!
- And in addition to the planner that I purchased, there are academic year, teacher, wedding, pregnancy and baby’s first year planners, to name a few other options for you to choose from.
- There is a VISIONS page – that’s right, a page right inside your planner to create your own mini vision board. How awesome is that!! I actually teach Vision Board Workshops, so this is right up my alley and something I’ve never had in my planner before. #MakesMeHappy
- Planning pages – there are a bunch of cool pages: a place to record your goals, places you’d like to visit, identify things you want to improve on, a place to design your perfect week, keep track of monthly tasks, etc. They have thought of it all.
- Each month has its own visions page with space to track personal, relationship, health & fitness, family & home, work & school, and financial goals. There is also a place to track “fun & adventure”.
- And maybe a looked over benefit to some people, but one I love, an inside back pocket! This is something every planner should have in my opinion.
So, I think you see my point…my planner is the bomb! Couldn’t love it more. But now let me tell you about the FUN PART! THE STICKERS! You can purchase all sorts of stickers on bloom’s site! I guess it’s the little kid in me, but I’ve always loved using stickers. If I can use a sticker to record my workouts, keep track of my coffee dates, remind me of appointments, when to pay my bills, etc., I’m all in!!
After my initial purchase of my planner and a set of stickers, I was pleasantly surprised one morning by an email from bloom!! (And yes, I know I’m not capitalizing the name of their company…and it’s a struggle for me, a self-proclaimed grammar nerd…but that is how they actually write their company’s name.) After interacting with them a bit on their social media platforms, they were curious enough to check me out. I guess “Bloom with Bec” caught somebody’s attention at the company. YAY! They took a peek at my website and found that we shared a similar mission: to help women bloom into their best lives!

It’s lovely, with a floral background on each page, and displays a – wait for it – inspirational quote on each day. I love that I’ll be able to re-use this year after year. Currently I’m displaying this on my kitchen table. I enjoy being able to flip to a new page, and a new quote, each morning as I’m enjoying my breakfast. It really helps to start my day with a dose of positivity.

Don’t just grow when you can BLOOM.
I have always loved Winnie the Pooh.
I loved him when I was a little girl and used to sing his theme song all the time.
I loved reading books about him to my baby girl.
I love the photo I have of my husband holding a stuffed Pooh Bear when he was a little boy.
I love that my Mom cleaned up and restored my husband’s worn and loved stuffed Winnie the Pooh, and that he now resides in our home.
The bond is real and deep.

I am often amazed when my kids share their memories with me. Sometimes I am completely surprised that these are things they remember. You never really know when you are creating a memory for other people. Sure there are times we go out of our way to try to create fond memories: holiday traditions come to mind. But it’s often the everyday activities, shared laughs, shared stories etc. that are turning into memories. Cherish the fun and celebratory times, but also cherish the day-to-day, because you just might be making a sweet memory for somebody you love.

Today we are so busy, so over scheduled, always on the run. How often do you have a day, or even simply a few hours, to just be? What just might turn out to be a blessing in disguise is the forced downtime, the time spent a home, with our family, away from others, during this coronavirus pandemic. It’s allowing us to clear our schedules, have more white space in our lives, more downtime, more time to simply be. Enjoy the slower pace of things in this season we find ourselves in. Take time to meditate, to think, to journal, to have conversation, to imagine, to dream…to just be.
“What day is it?”
“Today,” said Piglet.
“Ah,” said Pooh. “My favorite day.”
This to me is simply a reminder to enjoy EVERY day; to find joy in each new day you are given. Imagine the day you could have, if you work up with the mindset that THIS was your favorite day! Come on, let’s all give it a try.
“The things that make me different are the things that make me, ME!”
Stop comparing yourself to others. Stop worry about what others think. Stop worrying about what others may or may not be saying about you, your family, your business, your style, your looks. Just be YOU! Be thankful for those qualities that make you uniquely you. Be thankful for what makes you different, what draws people to you, what others enjoy and adore about you. Be the best YOU that you can be.

“Yes, Piglet?” said Pooh.
“Oh nothing,” said Piglet.
“I was just making sure of you.”
Be thankful for, and express the joy you feel for simply being with those you love. That’s all!
